DISC is a behaviour assessment tool, based on the work of Harvard psychologist William Marston.  In his book, Emotions of Normal People (1928), he explains his theory that one’s normal emotions lead to behavioural differences and that, therefore, each person’s behaviour might change over time. Marston’s theory centred around four different personality traits: Dominance, Inducement, Submission, and Compliance.  In the 1940′s, Walter Clark, an industrial psychologist, built upon Marston’s ideas and created DISC as a personality profiling tool.

Research has shown that an individual’s behavioural characteristics can be grouped together under four groupings called personality styles.  All people share these four styles to varying degrees of intensity. People who have similar personality styles tend to exhibit specific behavioural characteristics that are common to their personality style. After these developments, the acronym DISC now stands for:

  • D (Drive/Dominance)
  • I (Influence)
  • S (Steadiness)
  • C (Compliance)

Each and every one of us possesses the characteristics of all four types in some form, but we have one style that is our dominant personality type.
